Cow milk production test:
From 1980 onward, we have undertaken a dairy cattle husbandry test with the subsidies of the Council of Agriculture. Currently we have a total of 16 to 20 milk cows with excellent conditions. Now the emphasis is on the research and control of milk production, with an aim of providing excellent-quality and sufficient-quantity milk at the same time.

Research on processed milk products:
The Institute sets up a dairy product processing plant and dairy product laboratory so as to produce all sorts of icy dairy items, including bottled milk, popsicle, ice cream, yogurt and yogurt milk, with the brand name of “Green Pasture” into the market.

The milk products and relevant commodities of the Institute:
The Institute adopts the latest technologies and ultra heat treated method (138’C, 3-5 sec) to manufacture milk products, which retains most of the nutrition and keep the original flavor of fresh milk.
1. Bottled milk
Presently the 1-liter bottled milk developed by the Institute is sold over four agencies including Kincheng Supermarket of Kinmen Fishermen’s Association, Kinhu Supermarket of Kinmen Fishermen’s Association, Kinsha Mall and Crystal Purple Restaurant at the ground floor of the administration building of the Institute. We would most welcome patrons, local or from other cities, to come to visit the above shops. Each is at NTD 65 for a retailer price. The milk can be kept for seven days in a refrigerator under 5’C.
2. Popsicles and ice cream
The popsicles and ice cream produced by the Institute are all aromatic and tasty. Presently we have developed milk popsicles, peanut popsicles, and popsicles with the flavor of passion fruit or sea salt. Milk ice cream and chocolate ice cream are also very popular with customers.

Counseling for prevention of husbandry pollution:
We have invited professionals from the island Taiwan to come and examine the three-phase waste water prevention facilities installed by our pig farmers. In addition, we have employed annual subsidies to improve the above facilities’ efficiency and lower pollution.

Counseling for beef cattle husbandry:
The Institute has counseled the local farmers to use brewers’ grains for breeding beef cattle so as to lower husbandry cost. Currently we have 5,500 in total. Beef cattle used to be the most profitable husbandry in Kinmen, when regulations regarding live beef cows exported to Taiwan were enforced in the end of 2009 before foot-and-mouth disease broke out shortly afterwards. We are making effort to push for the relevant regulations into enforcement again.

Research and promotion of deer husbandry:
1. We are presently raising 139 Formosan sika deer and 14 Sambar. Aside from continual reproduction and preservation, we have started a collaborative effort with NTU Dept. of Animal Science and Technology, and has discovered by the testing done by the latter that the preserved flock of Formosan sika deer in our institute are pure-breed.
2. Aside from continual deer breeding and preservation, the Institute has assisted local deer farmers by conducting deer husbandry sessions. Additionally, we have put forth efforts in developing deer antlers-related commodities and coordinated with Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Inc. in producing deer antler liquors and building networks for selling.

Research and promotion of goat husbandry:
The Institute has dedicated to introducing good-quality goats from Taiwan Island and formulating plans for goat husbandry in Kinmen.

Ostrich breeding and promotion:
We have raised ostriches in “Adorable Animal Area” and have worked on developing related processed commodities.

Emu breeding and promotion:
We have bred flocks of emu in “Adorable Animal Area” for people to come and visit. This is also good for parent-kid education.

Waterfowl breeding and research:
The Institute reared several kinds of waterfowl such as mallards, swans and black swans for visitors who come here as excursions to appreciate.

Poultry breeding and promotion:
The Institute helped local farmers develop better technologies for raising laying hens and broiler chicken, aiming to make the brewers’ grains chicken into food traceability system.

Recreational husbandry development:
Except for raising dairy cattle for milk production and manufacturing processed foods, the park has also bred oxen, horses, goats, Formosan sika deer, Sambar, macaques, peacocks and many kinds of poultry for people to come and visit. With dozens of animals and a park of 8.7 hectares, we pay efforts in collaborating industry, tourism and recreation, as well as educational resources.

Counseling for peasants and local promotion:
The Institute has for long continued with starting sessions for livestock raising and management, disease prevention, and livestock processed food, in the hope of enhancing farmers’ professional skills and increasing their ability in processing food and developing new products.

Cows imported from Australia:
Under the guidance of Kinmen County Government, the Institute has started a cattle breeding with distillers’ grains program, with importation of Brangus from Australia on Oct. 21, 2011. A total of 243 beef cows and 5 beef bulls were introduced in here and categorized in stalls. Some of them were reproduced with artificial insemination and the first baby cub was born on Oct. 25, 2012. As of March 5, 2013, 129 cubs were born. It is expected that 20 more cubs are to be born before the end of this March.

In the 13rd meeting of the Kinmen cattle breeding with distillers’ grains program on Jan. 28 this year, a resolution was passed that the abovementioned cubs should be used for reproduction. Meanwhile the bulls will be raised in the Institute and be included in the same raising model as that of Angus beef cattle (including growth test, quality test and carcass gradation). The Institute has made efforts in conducting a hybrid test of Australian cattle and oxen and will deliver the offspring to the market in the latter half of 2014. We will formulate a minute plan before officially reporting to the county government.
